Dizziness is common but NOT “NORMAL”
When you are dizzy, you have to see your ENT doctor. There are many causes of dizziness and it is important to know what causes your dizziness in order to get proper treatment.
See your doctor if you experience any recurrent, sudden, severe, or prolonged and unexplained dizziness or vertigo; or if you are feeling the following sensations:
- A false sense of motion or spinning (vertigo)
- Lightheadedness or feeling faint
- Unsteadiness / loss of balance
- A feeling of floating, wooziness or heavy-headedness
You may have experienced any of these sensations or worsened when you are walking, standing up or moving your head accompanied by nausea or it could be so severe that you need to sit or lie down. This sensation could last for a few seconds or recur for several days.
There are many possible causes of dizziness
- Inner ear problems
- Neurological conditions
- Anxiety disorders
- Low iron levels (anemia)
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
- Overheating and dehydration
A sudden onset of dizziness not only increases your risk of falling but also of injuring yourself. Without proper treatment or left unattended, you could experience long-term consequences if your dizziness goes untreated.
One of the most widely used treatment to diagnose dizziness or vertigo is the use of oculography or eye movement recording through the use of visual frenzel googles (visual frenzel test).
It is an exam to guide the diagnosis in case of vertigo and dizziness and by it we can know if the cause is peripheral (ear) or central (brain). This technology is used to record the orientation and motion of the eyeballs and can also be used in many applications.
There are many types of dizziness that manifest movements of the eyes pupils which could help your doctor diagnose the cause of the dizziness. These eyes movements could be rotatory, vertical, horizontal or mixed. Detection of the eye movements helps your ENT doctor provide a correct diagnosis of dizziness by analyzing the eye movements through the use of visual frenzel googles which amplifies and shows these tiny movements very clearly.
