Early Intervention for newborns: Rule of 1, 3 & 6

Early Intervention for newborns such as hearing screening programs in newborns enable detection of hearing loss in children with undiagnosed hearing loss, including mild and unilateral deficit . The incidence of sensorineural hearing loss ranges from 1 to 3 per 1,000 live births in term healthy neonates, and 2–4 per 100 in high-risk infants .

Early intervention for newborns who are deaf or hard-of-hearing leads to improved language, communication, and social–emotional outcomes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends hearing screenings for all newborns. The goal is for all babies to have a newborn hearing screening by one month of age, identified by 3 months of age and enrolled in early intervention or treatment, if identified as deaf or hard of hearing, by the age of 6 months.

If it is Pass : hearing is normal.
