    Eye Doctor Visitation Checklist

Your sight is of vital importance to your well-being and thus must always be looked after and cared for.

Most doctors suggest a comprehensive eye exam be conducted every two years. This varies depending on your age, any prior conditions you may have and your family medical history. It is also necessary to have an eye doctor preparation list and know who you are visiting as there are three types of eye specialists:

    • Opticians: These specialists assist you with acquiring your prescription glasses. From building to fitting and even selling prescription glasses, an optician can help you find the proper glasses you need. They also deal with contact lenses and can assist you with medical products such as eye drops.
    • Optometrists: When you need to have your vision checked, measured and rated, these are the specialists you should be referred to. They can also prescribe lenses, diagnose common eye diseases and give medical advice. If your condition is more complicated or severe, optometrists will refer you to the next type of eye specialist.
    • Ophthalmologists: Medical Doctors with years of training especially with regards to the eyes and vision, these doctors can operate on your eyes, conduct complete eye exams and treat complex eye diseases.

Now that you understand the different types of eye specialists, it should be easier for you to create your eye doctor visitation check list and know who it is you will need to visit. There are a few things you will need to have ready in advance before your appointment with the eye specialist.

    • Make sure you are upfront about any and every concern you have about your eyes and your vision.
    • Sometimes, your visit to the eye doctor might require you to have your pupils dilated. You will need to know this in advance so you can carry along a pair of sunglasses to prevent your eyes from harsh lights as they will be quite sensitive after your visit.
    • If you are already wearing prescription glasses or are on any drugs, make sure you bring them along with you to show your eye specialist.
    • Have a list of questions and doubts you may have ready for the doctor so they may be able to answer them all for you.

You can expect the doctor to conduct several procedures on your sight and your head to assess the health of your eyes.  Steps in your eye doctor preparation list vary from rom checking your eye muscle movement by having you look at an object held by the examiner, to conducting a visual acuity test where you will be asked to read a series of alphabets that get progressively smaller, using only one eye at a time. You could also be asked to do a refraction assessment. There are other procedures as well but all in all, your visit to the eye doctor need not be unpleasant or stressful now that you know how to prepare for and what to expect at your exam.
