Feeling dizzy often? Here’s why you may be suffering from Vertigo

Everyone has felt a little dizzy at least once in their lifetimes. Chances are, most people will remember the time they felt dizzy to as the experience is disorienting. There are several causes of dizziness, from a sudden drop in blood pressure to an ear infection, hypoglycemia and even anxiety disorders, all these factors and more can affect your body’s natural stabilizing elements, the inner ear. One disorder that can lead to dizziness is vertigo.

    It’s all about Vertigo

Vertigo is term used to describe feelings of light-headedness, floating and giddiness with symptoms lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes. The causes of Vertigo can vary but is generally considered to originate from inner ear infections.

How to get rid of it

Treatment of Vertigo is relative to what is causing it in the first place. In many cases, the symptoms are short-lived and the brain can adapt to changes and learn to continue to remain in a state of balance. Sufferers will return to a normal state after a brief period of disorientation. However, for those who suffer longer periods or more frequent spells of Vertigo, there is most likely a deeper and more serious condition prevalent. In such conditions, visiting your doctor and taking certain medication is advised to help overcome or tolerate symptoms of dizziness and vertigo.

If you ever happen to feel the effects of vertigo and are feeling dizzy, there are a few things you can do to help alleviate the situation. These include lying down on your back and raising your feet off the ground to at least a foot high. This allows blood from the lower half of your body to rush into the top half, especially your head, allowing or better blood flow to the head and brain.

Untrue facts and myths on dizziness and Vertigo

There were a number of myths relating to causes of dizziness in the past, since it was hard to diagnose the problem. Some attribute feelings of dizziness just to anxiety and tell those suffering to calm down. While this may be the case if you are experiencing dizziness for the first time, it’s definitely not normal if you are constantly feeling this way.

Others sometimes are lead to believe that it’s all in their heads and that there isn’t anything to worry about as they are just imagining a problem. Once again, the content of this myth is true, it is in your head, but that doesn’t mean you ignore it. If the symptoms are regular, you may need to visit a doctor.

There is an assumption that those who suffer from Vertigo are generally older and that young people don’t have to worry about this problem. This is not true as patients of Vertigo come from all ages and genders as it affects anyone.

    Dizzy no more

If you or someone you know is experiencing Vertigo or episodes of dizziness more than once or you feel a pattern is emerging, it may be signs that something is wrong and you or the person affected may need to visit their doctor immediately. A visit to your family doctor can help diagnose the causes of dizziness and it’s best you do it as early as possible to prevent further complications or damage. Alternatively, you can visit an ENT (Ear, Nose & Mouth) specialist. These doctors focus on areas of the body that deal with balance and can tell you whether or not your condition is serious or not. The GMC Jumeirah Medical clinic in Dubai, with its highly trained staff and world class facilities have their very own ENT specialist and you can book an appointment with them by calling the clinic directly.
