Pediatric dentistry is a specialized branch of dental treatment at GMCClinics that provides comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care needs for children (infants/babies through teenagers), including those with special needs (the chronically ill, disabled, or mentally challenged). Pediatric dentists (also paediatric) promote dental health in children while also serving as an educational resource for parents.
The child’s first visit to the dentist should take place after the appearance of the first tooth or by the child’s first birthday.
An early oral examination is very important as it helps detect the early stages of tooth decay among toddlers.
Early detection is essential to maintain oral health, change deviant habits, and treat them as simply as possible if necessary.
In addition, parents receive information on home prevention programs (brushing, flossing, fluoride use), caries (tooth decay) risk assessments, the possible effects of the finger, thumb, and pacifier habits, and advice on how to prevent mouth and tooth injuries in their children.
It is important that children have a great introduction to dental treatment and feel comfortable from their very first visit.
At GMCClinics, we aim to make each dental visit a positive experience for you and your child.

Baby and Kid's Teeth
Baby tooth development begins while the baby is still in the womb. The first buds of milk teeth appear within the baby’s jaw around the fifth week of pregnancy.
At birth, babies have 20 primary teeth well-hidden under their gums (10 in the upper jaw and 10 in the lower jaw). They are commonly known as milk teeth.
The average child has their full set of 20 primary teeth erupted in the mouth by the age of 3 years. Teething pain is common in children and can usually be managed without medication.
Around 6 years of age, baby teeth start to loosen and fall, one by one, to make place for adult teeth. It is totally normal for a child to lose their first tooth up to a year or 2 earlier or later than 6 years of age.
It is also common for baby girls to lose their teeth earlier than baby boys. The first baby tooth to fall out is usually located in the front of the lower jaw.
By the age of about 21 years, the average person has 32 permanent teeth – 16 in the upper jaw and 16 in the lower jaw.

Sedation Dentistry
Do your kids have anxiety or fear of visiting the dentist? Do they have trouble getting (and maintaining) numb from anesthetics or difficulty keeping still for extended periods of time?
If the answer is YES, then we have the solution for you. At GMCClinics, our pediatric dental specialist knows how to make children comfortable and safe and offers effective sedation.
But what is sedation dentistry concretely?
Children who experience dental anxiety can get a number of dental treatments safely and painlessly thanks to sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry has a number of advantages such as:
- No recollection of having had the procedure
- No feeling of time while sedated
- Reduced/no ability to smell or hear
- No apprehension or worry during therapy
From mild, to moderate to deep sedation, our pediatric dental specialist will advise you on what is best for your child.
Dr. Sapna Hegde offers dental treatment under conscious sedation with laughing gas/IV sedation/general anesthesia for anxious/phobic young children and teenagers.
Please contact our practice to schedule a consultation and learn more about sedation dentistry, and find out which sedation dentistry method may be right for your child.
