Prostate Cancer Screening
November is Prostate Cancer Awareness month.
The risk of prostate cancer increases with age and it is recommended that all men over the age of 50 should be routinely screened for prostate cancer. The risk also increases with a positive family history of prostate cancer, so men with a family history should be screened earlier.
Patients with symptoms of prostatic enlargement, specifically decreased urinary stream, difficulty passing urine or fully emptying the bladder, or an increasing need to pass urine overnight should be assessed and tested.
Screening for prostate cancer is particularly important because there are no proven ways of preventing the disease. Studies have shown, however, that men on a balanced low fat diet, those exercising regularly, and those maintaining a healthy weight have a lower incidence of prostate cancer, so healthy lifestyle choices are the best means of prevention.
Any male patients with any concerns about their prostate or their general health are encouraged to avail themselves of GMCClinics Prostate Cancer Awareness month special offer on screening this month.
